Cathodic protection is a method of applying a current to a protected pipeline or connecting a more negative metal or alloy as an anode to a protected pipeline, thereby polarizing the protected pipeline to eliminate or reduce the corrosion rate of the pipeline.
Sacrificial anode for pipeline cathodic protection：
The protected pipeline is connected to a metal or alloy that can provide cathodic protection current (i.e. sacrificial anode) to polarize the cathodes of the protected pipeline to reduce the rate of corrosion of the pipeline.
In the protected pipeline (cathode) and the sacrificial anode formed by the earth cell, the sacrificial anode is gradually corrosion consumption, so called "sacrifice" anode. Sacrifice themselves to protect the pipeline, sacrifice is the most important feature of the anode protection.
The advantages of this type of protection are:
① protection of the current utilization rate is high, will not happen to protect;
② applicable to non-power region or a short distance of the pipeline;
③ no interference with adjacent underground metal facilities;
④ construction technology is simple, low installation and maintenance costs;
⑤ the grounding of the pipeline, the protection of both;
⑥ daily management of small workload.
The disadvantages are:
① drive potential is low, difficult to protect the current regulation;
② the use of soil resistivity by the limit;
③ large diameter, bare or poor insulation corrosion of the implementation of the pipeline difficult;
④ in the stray current interference areas, will lose the protective effect;
⑤ The protection time is limited by the life of the sacrificial anode.
